Hiscox shares had lost 15 pence on the day falling to 125.5 pence. The FTSE 100 had climbed back over the 4000 mark, but only after further selling pushed the index below 3900 just before mid-day.
One of today's biggest winners was Aviva. Its share price gained 37 pence, reaching 412 pence by the close.
