Hiscox has said there is an increasing amount of thefts of “man-bags”, a satchel-style bag for men.

The insurer said a growing numbers of mainly young professional men now carry an array of gadgets and other valuable personal items around with them in these fashionable canvas or leather satchel-style bags, which are easier to carry and less unwieldy – and therefore easier prey for thieves – than the traditional boxy, heavy briefcase.

Hiscox said it is aware of a growing number of incidents involving man-bag theft.

Hiscox estimates that the average man-bag and its contents could be worth well over £1,000, if it contains the latest must-have men's gadgets.

According to Hiscox, the majority of man-bag thefts are likely to take place on the street or in bars and other public places, yet many standard insurance policies often don't cover theft of belongings outside the home.

The company advises anyone with a man-bag to consider a home insurance policy which covers all of their possessions on an “all-risks worldwide basis”, so that their belongings are automatically covered when they are out and about, including business trips and travel abroad.
