Zurich Financial Services has announced that Rolf Hüppi is to resign as chairman and member of the board following the annual general meeting (AGM).

The board announced that it intends to appoint its current vice chairman - Lodewijk van Wachem - as the new chairman, subject to his re-election at the AGM.

Hüppi commented: "I have informed the board of directors that I consider it desirable and important that the new leadership of our group can be established unencumbered by the ongoing public controversy surrounding me.

"Therefore, I shall, following the appointment of the new chief executive, also step down as chairman and will resign from the board of directors."

This move follows Hüppi resigning as chief executive in February. Zurich announced at the time that it planned to appoint a replacement by June.
