In a landmark decision this week an Australian court awarded AUD$5.7m (£2.1m) for injury to a wrestler against his coach's professional indemnity insurance.

This is expected to set an international precedent for future actions in the courts. Coaches' premiums are expected to rise considerably as a result.

The director of sports insurer Sportscover UK commented on the possible repercussions: "Even though this decision has occurred on the other side of the world, it has set an expensive precedent for sport worldwide.

"I would recommend that all coaches review their indemnity cover in light of this decision and seriously consider their responsibility to their players prior to coaching this weekend."

He added that the effect on amateur coaching could be dramatic because "there will now be volunteers on the weekends questioning their commitment and what it could cost them".
