There have been protests in parts of Russia against the introduction of compulsory car insurance.

Previously car insurance was voluntary, with only about 10% of Russians taking out policies.

The government has introduced mandatory third party insurance from 1 July, but Russian motorists say it is a rip-off.

However critics said the premiums are too expensive and the sum insured under the scheme would not cover any serious damages.

To the amusement of Russian motorists, the government has exempted itself from the scheme as there are no funds its budget.
