Tony Blair has backed Insurance Times' report that identity cards could be introduced in the UK in the wake of the US attacks.

Last Thursday Insurance Times reported aviation security and risk management experts' warnings that it was likely the government would review the ID card issue.

Aviation security consultant Ian Johnson said: “With the amount of refugees coming in, some of which don't have passports, it's ridiculous that we're the only country in Europe not to have identity cards.”

On Sunday, the Prime Minister broached the issue of ID cards during an interview on CNN, saying emergency action being considered included compulsory ID cards and more stop-and-search activities.

This morning a 10 Downing Street spokesman confirmed ID cards were an option “that was being looked at”.
