Insurers have "no god-given right to survive", said CII president Andy Homer.
In his opening address to this year's CII conference, Homer emphasised the importance of the customer to the industry.
"The key strategy for the industry must be to orientate itself around its customers. Only by growing and adapting to consumer expectations will the market remain viable."
"It is up to the CII and its members to lead the industry through a challenging period of history. Our task is to promote technical capability and integrity. We must ensure that our training, education and competence development activity reflects the needs of the market - employers, staff, the regulator and most importantly cosnumers."
