Information provider Equifax has called on insurers to back a government campaign against money laundering.

The industry-wide initiative supported by the Treasury, National Criminal Intelligence Service and the FSA aims to educate customers on the need to prove their identity to insurers. The initiative follows the government's recent decision to make identity theft a criminal offence.

Neil Lewis, head of Equifax Fraud Services said: "We strongly encourage businesses to make use of the campaign materials available from the government when communicating with their customers.

"This should happen alongside the implementation of anti-money laundering systems that support verification and application processes."
