Liability coverage for the fatal derailment of a Japanese commuter train was led by Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance and written within the Japanese market, according to reports.
Police are currently trying to determine why the West Japan Railway train derailed on Monday, killing 73 and injuring at least 400 others.
The commuter train left the tracks near Amagasaki, a suburb of Osaka, and slammed into an apartment building, trapping riders and heavily damaging the building.
Koji Takayama, assistant manager of international affairs with West Japan Railway, said property damage was "very difficult to calculate." He declined to comment further on insurance coverage.
