Gem-A's gemmologists and Osmiridium's jewellery historians are joining forces to create the international jewellery trade's first jewellery authentication service.

JewelResearch aims to reduce problems caused by fakes in industry and will assess watches, objets d'art, coins and other antique items as well as jewellery.

The testing service is to be launched in the autumn at the headquarters of Gem-A, the Gemmological Association of Great Britain. It will be headed by Jack Ogden, the founder of specialist jewellery consultancy Osmiridium.

Mr Ogden said: "We'll pay particular attention to authentication, considering aspects such as whether the right solder has been used on an item, whether the enamel is the right composition, and whether the item features original tool manufacturing marks."
