Legal & General is to handle the mortgage protection business of estate agents Spicerhaart after first winning the contract on an interim basis in March 2003.

Spicerhaart, which operates 250 branches of Spicer McColl, haart, Felicity J Lord, Darlows and Bailys, said it has now agreed a long-term contract with L&G, which had been appointed following the withdrawal of Britannic Assurance from the life assurance market.

"We have chosen to partner with Legal & General because of its reputation, management team and overall strength in the UK and we are planning to work with them in a number of other areas in the property market," said Paul Smith, the chief executive of Spicerhaart.
