The UK was hit by 10,000 lightning strikes last month, including 28,000 in one day, 3 August, said EA Technology.
But the power engineering specialist said it failed to top August 1997's record of 140,000 strikes.
“It may have seemed there were thunderstorms nearly every day, but amazingly, there was only a little more lightning activity last month than in equivalent periods in 2001 and 1994,” said EA Technology's Don Eaton.
“The storm on 3 August was particularly powerful, however, especially in southern England.”
EA Technology operates a lightning location service monitoring lightning strikes across the UK and Ireland.
