Lloyds TSB Insurance has estimated that most of the 18 million insured homes in the UK are underinsured, which could leave them in danger of not being properly covered in the event of a claim.
The insurer has urged homeowners to evaluate regularly the value of their home contents to make sure they have appropriate levels of insurance in place.
It added that nearly five million, or just over 21%, of UK homes were uninsured.
