The London P&I Club has called on the shipping industry to improve safety standards in order to cut claims.

In the latest issue of its StopLoss Bulletin, the Club cited the case of a Panamax carrier which caused a section of harbour to collapse. Subsequent investigations revealed that the berth had been poorly maintained, it said.

The Club warned the case showed that safety should not focus solely on ships and their operators.

A Club statement said: "Heavy responsibilities must also rest with those running the facilities at which ships call. Regulation of ships and their operators alone will not suffice."
