A significant number of the 2,000 staff at Independent Insurance may receive redundancy notices before the end of this week, a former employee of the insurer has said.

The former staff member said his understanding is that Pricewaterhousecoopers, the insurer's liquidators, are planning to issue redundancy notices on Thursday, June 28.

He believed that Independent's sales and underwriting staff would bear the brunt of any losses.

However, he said PWC was planning to retain a number of staff in the finance and claims departments.

A spokeswoman for PWC said it did not wish to prejudice discussions it was currently having with representatives of Independent's staff.

She added: “People will know where they stand by the end of the week.”

Most staff at Independent are understood to have been paid up until the end of June.
