London law firm Rowe & Maw and US firm Mayer, Brown & Platt have merged to create an international top ten legal giant by size and revenue. The new firm will have over 1300 lawyers and over £400m in combined fees.

The transatlantic deal is the first to combine a top ten US legal firm with a leading UK firm.

The combined firm will have 13 offices, including a presence in the financial centres of London, Paris, Frankfurt and New York - in addition to representative offices in Beijing and Shanghai.

In a joint statement, the two firms said they already had many clients in common and the tie-up would build on the strengths of each in corporate law, banking and finance, information technology, intellectual property, insurance, litigation, international arbitration and tax.
