The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has warned that some fire duct systems may provide inadequate levels of fire safety due to misuse.
ASFP said that some fire rated duct systems were marketed and used on the basis of fire resistance performance, tests and assessments which did not reflect the original design of the duct.
There are four distinct types of fire rated ductwork: smoke extract systems, pressurisation systems, kitchen extract systems and mechanical ventilation systems.
ASFP warned that the type of system the duct was designed for should be clearly specified in the test certification. It also said test results should be assessed by an independent authority.
