Moore Stephens and Macnair Mason are to merge on 1 May 2006, in a move that is said to significantly strengthen the merged firms' position in the international insurance and reinsurance industries.

The merged firm will practise as Moore Stephens LLP, with the transaction adding some £4m fee income and seven partners and 46 staff to Moore Stephens LLP's London operation.

Richard Moore, Moore Stephens' senior partner, said: "Moore Stephens is a major London firm and we need to continue to develop our presence. Macnair Mason has complementary skills in a number of business sectors, and is well known in
the insurance industry, which will enable us to service those markets even more effectively than at present. We are delighted that a firm with such a strong reputation has decided to join forces with us."

Two Macnair Mason partners, Stuart Markley and Anton Luck will join Moore Stephens' Insurance Industry Group, together with audit manager, Marko Chraplywyj, and Chris Keene, managing director of Macnair Mason subsidiary,
MMB Compliance Solutions, which provides compliance and regulatory consultancy to the insurance market.
