The highest car insurance premiums are in the North West, according to a survey by Tesco Motor Insurance.

Average premiums in the North West cost £136 more than the cheapest UK region, East Anglia, according to Tesco's quarterly car insurance publication.

The survey of direct motor insurers found that the average cost of car insurance was £437, with the North West 22.3% above this price at £535.

A spokesperson for Tesco Personal Finance blamed the North West's expense on high claims rates and high density of traffic in the area.
