MPs representing the major political parties have filed a motion calling for government action over the "substantial increase" in premiums for employers' liability cover.

Dr Vincent Cable, Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham said: "This House notes with concern the substantial increase in the insurance costs to business for employers' liability and public liability cover; further notes that businesses have had premium increases of 500% or more imposed."

He added that 9% of manufacturing companies have been refused cover, along with 6% of other businesses.

The motion calls upon the Government to promote an enforceable code of conduct, "ensuring a consistent and transparent approach by the insurance industry."
