Association of British Insurers releases critical illness insurance guide to clarify cover.

The ABI (Association of British Insurers) has launched a consultation on a new Guide to Critical Illness insurance for consumers.

The guide has been produced to help consumers understand better exactly what critical illness insurance does and the definitions of the main conditions covered by it.

Nick Kirwan, the ABI's head of health and protection insurance, said: "This Guide builds on the work we've already done to make definitions of illnesses clearer and the application process more straightforward. Ultimately, all our initiatives are geared towards increasing the number of claims that are paid. The Consumer Guide will help to do this by providing consumers and financial advisers with a simple explanation of what Critical Illness insurance is all about."

The ABI is seeking views from insurers, financial advisers, charities, voluntary organisations and any other group or individual with an interest in Critical Illness insurance. The consultation period runs until 28 September 2007, after which the Guide will be sent to the Plain English Campaign to obtain a Crystal Mark.
