Insurers could face problems from the amount of aluminium components used in cars, according to ABS Accident Solutions.

ABS said that at present there was a shortage in the specialist tools and trained repairers needed to repair aluminium components.

ABS network director Alan Hodgkinson said he expected the problem to grow the use as aluminium components increased.

"Aluminium is likely to be seen on higher volume cars very soon and there will be pressure for a much wider range of repair options," he said.

He added that other new technologies used in car manufacturing would also affect the way insurers allocated repair work.
