The internet dominated technology news in the personal lines sector this year, Among the new launches was Gosure.com , a subsidiary of Columbus Financial Services. It made the news by announcing it was to slash the cost of travel insurance by 20%.

Gosure.com's launch coincided with that of Inspop.com but was not quite as high profile. Inspop.com spent more than £5m on a national cross-media advertising campaign which included television, radio and newspapers.

Inspop.com said it expected to win 500,000 motor, 150,000 homes, 50,000 travel and 30,000 health customers in the first 12 months. The online intermediary then teamed up with broker Quoteline Direct to sell motor and home insurance on Inspop's site.

Other partnerships in this sector included Richard Branson and the AA who offered motor and household on his virgin money.com site.
