’His leadership, technical insight and commitment have left an enduring legacy and we wish him every success in his well-earned retirement,’ says group chief underwriting officer

Apollo has announced that Simon Mason will be retiring from his role as head of marine, energy and transportation (MET) on 1 January 2026.

Succeeding Mason in his role, Martin Jackson will be promoted to head of MET while also retaining his position as class leader of aviation.

In addition, Mark Phythian will be promoted to deputy head of MET from his position as executive underwriter of marine hull and Ciara Sheikh to class leader of cargo from her position as hull underwriter – roles they have both held since January 2023.

James Slaughter, group chief underwriting officer, said: “These promotions reflect the exceptional depth of talent we have within Apollo and the MET division and I am confident they will continue to drive growth across our specialist lines.

”As we look ahead, the MET division is well-positioned to strengthen our underwriting performance and deliver value for our clients and partners.”

Stepping down

Since joining Apollo in 2013, Mason has played a pivotal role in developing the MET division.

Mason will remain available to support the business during the upcoming reinsurance renewals, while continuing to provide advice and guidance to ensure a smooth transition.

Slaughter added: “Mason has been a cornerstone of Apollo’s MET business since joining in 2013.

“His leadership, technical insight and commitment have left an enduring legacy and we wish him every success in his well-earned retirement.”
