John Lezemore, head of the chronic pain group at DWF Law, talks about the firm’s entry into the Excellence in Risk Management award
1. Why did you put yourselves forward for the Excellence in Risk Management category?
DWF pioneered leading the market on growing issues around Somatic Illness Claims – such as chronic pain, functional neurological disorder and subtle brain injury.

Over the last decade, DWF tackled the substantial increase of claims presented initially as low value claims, which subsequently dramatically increase to high value claims with disproportionate costs.
2. What do you think makes your entry stand out and why should you win the award?
DWF were the architects of setting up a dedicated Somatic Illness Team (SIT), uniquely including specialist lawyers and predictive and profiling analysts who devised a chronic pain identification toolkit, identifying these claims at the earliest stage and tackling claims with appropriate strategies.
3. What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?
Winning this award would mean recognition for DWF’s groundbreaking work in analysing a huge amount of claims data to identify trends and behaviours of claimant solicitors, which has resulted in a proven track record in dealing with somatic claims – and saved insurers £17.8m in 2023 alone.
