Intact Insurance’s president of global marine, Calvin Gray, and senior specialist yacht underwriter, Emily Grew, speak about their firm’s entry for the Specialist Insurer of the Year award

1. Why did you put yourselves forward for the Specialist Insurer of the Year category?

Calvin Gray

We put ourselves forward because we’ve redefined what excellence looks like in specialist insurance. In just two years, we’ve built a superyacht proposition that combines bold innovation, deep expertise and concierge-level service.

From underwriting some of the world’s largest yachts to introducing wellbeing programs like Superyacht Fitness, we’ve shown that we don’t just insure assets, we partner with clients to deliver solutions that go beyond insurance.

This category celebrates leadership and innovation and that’s exactly what Intact Insurance stands for.

2. What do you think makes your entry stand out and why should you win the award?

Our entry stands out as a story of transformation and impact. We identified a gap and created an integrated solution others couldn’t match – from build to navigation, Crew PA, $200m (£153m) capacity and local-admitted policies in 150 territories. Every yacht is surveyed for bespoke risk management and our flexible underwriting delivers tailored solutions.

Growing to over $30m (£23m) direct written premium in just two years, achieving 70% year-on-year growth, we’ve become the third-largest superyacht insurer in the London market.

Intact’s story of innovation with purpose – from ESG partnerships like SeaKeepers to wellbeing programs like Superyacht Fitness – is setting new standards for specialist insurance.

3. What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?

Winning this award would be a powerful recognition of our team’s vision and commitment to excellence. It would affirm that our approach – combining global scale, technical expertise and human-centric innovation – truly makes a difference.

For Intact Insurance, it’s not just about being the best insurer, it’s about shaping the future of marine insurance responsibly and ambitiously.

This award would celebrate the trust we’ve built with brokers and clients and inspire us to keep pushing boundaries for the benefit of the industry and the communities we serve.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
