Brighton's West Pier was not insured when it collapsed last month. West Pier Trust general manager Rachel Clark said it had not been possible to insure the pier for the past few years. "It is a derelict building in bad condition and we could not find anyone to insure it," she said.

Clark said the cost of the damage was difficult to quantify and the question remained as to how much it would cost to restore.

The pier stood for 130 years before succumbing to the English Channel waves, when a large section collapsed.
