Norwich Union (NU) has excluded cover for chemical, biological and nuclear attacks.
The insurer's 1 January renewal documents warned that home and content policies would exclude compensation for damage caused by such attacks.
But NU domestic policyholders can still claim for damage caused by a conventional bomb blast. Businesses will have to pay additional premiums to get cover for a chemical, biological or nuclear threat.
A NU spokesman said he was "surprised" more insurers did not offer the same exclusions.
