Norwich Union (NU) is set to go head-to-head with Saga to provide special insurance services for the over-50s.

Head of NU's household products division, Nick Pierson, said the firm was developing products for “end-customer segments”.

He said this meant developing products for special groups, such as the over-50s or families, rather than offering standard policies for everyone.

He said NU was using its database of customer information to develop special policies.

He added this could mean special low prices for the over-50s. But he warned, price was only one way of targeting special groups.

“We are looking at targeting groups within groups. For instance, we are differentiating active over-50s to less active over-50s,” Pierson said.

Other differentiated groups include policies for retired people with money and without much money.

But he said the products were still in development and no launch date was in mind.
