Norwich Union this week became the first insurer to investigate the prospects that a person suffering lung cancer would win a compensation claim for passive smoking.

The insurer has commissioned law firm Berrymans Lace Mawer to investigate the potential link between exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) and the development of subsequent illnesses.

Craig Templeton, head of liability claims at Norwich Union, said: “This is something that has come onto our radar and we want to see whether it is significant or not.”

The insurer said that it had received only a handful of claims to date, and this was “nothing on the same scale as asbestos.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
