Those searching for internet insurance deals can now access a new on-line directory from Cheshire Datasystems (CDL), at www.insuranceuk.net.

The site effectively works as a search engine of motor, household and travel intermediaries and brokers.

InsuranceUK is now being registered on all the UK's major search engines, and CDL is also in negotiations to form relationships with a number of web portals.

Insurer liaison manager Nigel Philips said: "Insuranceuk.net is a site designed to offer the public a single location providing the widest choice of intermediaries to fulfil their insurance requirements."

Currently there are around 60 brokers and intermediaries registered on the site, although CDL plans to grow this substantially. Registration is free to all brokers and intermediaries, the only charge made is when a customer purchases insurance on-line.

The software house says the site is currently only available to CDL brokers, but refused to say whether in the future non-CDL brokers will also be able to register for the site.

To search for an intermediary, a vistor clicks on one of the types of insurance – motor, household, etc. They then go into a subdirectory. Once in the subdirectory, customers have the option to search for intermediaries.

There are four ways to do this. The first is "email quotes", which searches by intermediaries who offer quotes via email. Second is "'intermediary websites", which looks for intermediaries who only have websites for marketing purposes. Next are "postcode locator", which searches for intermediaries by region, and "online quotes", which finds intermediaries that can offer fully interactive quotes.
