Motorists will be given at least 15 days' notice of renewal terms on motor insurance policies, under proposals announced by Irish commerce minister Noel Treacy on 8 March.

Treacy said the notice would be accompanied by a certificate of no-claims bonus, detailing the years of accident-free driving.

Treacy said many consumers were "totally frustrated" because they did not get enough notice of the terms of renewal.

"Such late notice is an obstacle to the consumer's ability to shop around," he said.

He said that, while many insurers and brokers provided renewal terms well in advance of the due date, some did not.

"Equally, alternate quotes may be refused without clear proof of no claims bonus, which can currently take some weeks to secure," Treacy said.Insurers and brokers have been invited to take part in consultation.
