Insurancetimes.co.uk is continuing its look at the latest insurance tenders for contracts to public and private organisations.

Today, we look at Humberside Police Authority's call for insurance cover.

One of the UK's leading police authority's, it is seeking cover for over £2m in relation to:

  • Legal insurance services.
  • Motor vehicle insurance services.
  • Property insurance services.
  • Liability insurance services.
  • General liability insurance services.

Speaking to Insurancetimes.co.uk, Police spokesman William Lambert said that since it began using brokers in the tenders process, its renewals have fallen sharply.

Lambert said: "Until several years ago we negotiated ourselves direct with insurers. Many of my colleagues in the procurement industry think the insurers are too tough during renewals if they are dealing with us direct.

"The broker (Aon) has helped us to get a better deal by improving our financial muscle."

Last week Insurancetimes.co.uk reported that local councils feel the large insurers are not interested in covering council's risks. Lambert said that he found this to be the case with the police authority's current insurer, Zurich Municipal.

He said: "We have found it difficult to drive a decent renewal from our existing insurers. They seem to avoid the large municipal risks."
