Quinn Insurance has to refund 20,500 customers after it emerged it failed to give them a promised discount, the Irish Independent reports.
The customers were supposed to get a discount for having more than one type of insurance with the company.
Quinn, which has been in administration for more than a year, admitted to the paper it had overcharged its customers.
"Quinn Insurance Limited (under administration) confirms that, as part of a recent routine evaluation of processes and procedures, it identified an error which resulted in some customers with multiple policies not having their multi-product discount correctly applied," the company said.
It added that refunds had been issued to all 20,500 affected non-commercial customers. The average refund amount was €63 per customer.
The insurer has now introduced new "control mechanisms", said a spokesman.
