Railtrack insurance and risk management head, Alan Fleming has been appointed the new deputy chairman of the Association of Insurance and Risk Managers (Airmic).

It follows the resignation of Paul Hopkin, who has left the role to focus on his position as head of risk management at the BBC. He felt unable to maintain his Airmic commitment concurrently.

Fleming is head of insurance and risk management at Railtrack and previously worked for ICI, Guinness and Diageo.

He played a leading role in establishing for Airmic Pool Re terrorism cover. Fleming was an Airmic executive director from 1993-5.

Airmic chairman, Mark Butterworth, said: "Members of the Airmic Council reluctantly accepted Paul's resignation and would like to thank him for his effort and enthusiasm during his tenure of the role.

"We have every confidence in Alan Fleming, however, to help lead the association through the challenges at the beginning of this new century."

One of Fleming's first tasks will be to help organise Airmic's annual conference in Birmingham, being staged from June 5-7.

Airmic represents the views and interests of risk and insurance managers in the private and public sectors.
