Estimates have dropped sharply of the potential loss at a paint storage depot in Beverley, East Yorkshire, after an explosion at the weekend, said sources.

Royal & SunAlliance (R&SA) was the insurer and Crawford & Co has been appointed the loss adjuster, working with R&SA's in-house adjusting service PCS.

An R&SA spokesman said: "As yet it is too early to say the extent of the damage and the loss incurred."

The explosion created a plume of smoke reaching thousands of feet into the air. Humberside police said no one was injured and the smoke was not thought to be toxic. The cause of the blast is so far unknown.
