Small business leaders have warned government that just tightening up the current safety legislation will not cure the long-term employers' liability crisis.
Federation of Small Businesses national chairman John Emmins said: "The problems small employers face with liability insurance will not be solved overnight which is why we have maintained an ongoing dialogue with the Government. There is still a long way to go but we have made a promising start on issues such as a new three week notice period for liability renewals."
"We now need some of the more fundamental problems to be addressed. The danger is that the government will take the easy way out and simply tighten the enforcement regime. Enforcement has a role to play, but the reality is that many responsible employers still find it very difficult to secure cover at a reasonable price."
