Broker Smart and Cook has acquired the insurance business of Middlesbrough-based Hopwood Insurance Services.

Under the deal Hopwood will be merged with the firm's existing Teesside branch office.

The buy is Smart and Cook's latest in a series of acquisitions in recent years, which has boosted its seen premium turnover to £110m with revenues for the current financial year expected to exceed £16.3m.

Smart and Cook group managing director Paul Meehan said: "I am delighted that we have successfully concluded this latest transaction, which continues our policy of planned growth through the acquisition of quality local businesses with good people and excellent reputations.

"There is a trend for consolidation within the industry, but it is important that the businesses we acquire reflect the standards and ethos which underpin the success of Smart and Cook. I am sure the arrival of Philip Hopwood and his team will greatly enhance our presence on Teesside."
