Brokers have been urged to “embrace” the web and to replicate their capabilities in the online marketplace for direct customers.

Mark Whitehead, commerce manager with insurer ACE, told delegates at the Insurance Times' SME conference, that working online provided the “biggest opportunity” for brokers.

He insisted that the traditional market would not disappear, as “people will always want advice and choice” and will always be prepared to pay for the provision, but that brokers may have to decide between an online and an offline world.

Whitehead warned that brokers should not enter the online arena “half-heartedly”.

He added: “The organisations which prosper will be those with strong brands and clear, simple strategies, who execute them well."
