Independent insurance broker and risk manager Smithson Mason Group (SMG) posts pre-tax profits for the year ending December 2000 of £806,000, up by 11%.

Commission and fees for the year were £5,328,239, an increase of 17.3%. Premium turnover for the group now exceeds £30m.

Earnings per capita increased by 7.4% to £44,338. Staff levels also increased by 10% taking the total number of employees to 121.

Further expansion occurred in 2000 with the opening of a credit risks division specialising in political and credit risk management.

Philip Battersby, joint managing director of SMG said: “Providing insurance cover is only a small part of what we do. Only by understanding the nature of our clients' business can we help them reduce the risks that might affect their operations.

The group, which comprises SMG General and Financial Services, has offices in Leeds, Bradford and Altrincham.
