Lloyds TSB Home Insurance is offering free cover to its 350,000 policyholders to safeguard wedding gifts, clothes and accessories.

With bridal wear and wedding accessories costing an average of £1,500, the value of items kept at a couple's home can quickly mount up.

Moreover, with the average wedding gift costing £50, the bancassurer is warning prospective brides and grooms of the need for extra cover.

As a result, Lloyds TSB said it will automatically increase the usual £50,000 cover limit on couple's home contents insurance by £3,000 for 30 days either side of their wedding day.

Customers are also eligible to add additional protection such as accidental damage cover to their policies.

The cover is available to Lloyds TSB's 350,000 household policyholders and new customers, and it can apply to family members who are living at the policyholder's address.

Jon Pain, managing director of Lloyds TSB Home Insurance, said: "The additional cover we offer for couples getting married gives important extra protection for any items associated with the wedding that are kept in the house, as well as gifts, whose value can soon add up."

Lloyds TSB's home contents policy offers no claims discounts of up to 35%, with the ability to transfer claim-free years from a previous insurer.

A 10% discount is available for taking both buildings and contents insurance.

The insurer also provides for free additional cover in December to cover presents bought for Christmas.

Policyholders are eligible for a 20% discount on their household insurance if they manage two claim-free years, up to a maximum discount of 35% for six years.

Also included in Lloyds' household cover is a free legal helpline.
