More than 500 Spanish policyholders still do not know whether they will receive any compensation following Independent Insurance going into provisional liquidation in June 2001. Uncertainty looms over the protection of their claims.

Solicitor Inka Piegsa-Quischotte, who represents a large proportion of the Spanish policyholders, spoke out on their behalf, saying: "My clients are frustrated at the pace of debt-recovery proceedings.

"Moreover, they feel let down by the British government, the Financial Services Authority and PricewaterhouseCoopers - all of whom have failed in their duty to protect each and every policyholder."
