AIG's settlement with Eliot Spitzer, the New York state attorney general, is likely to be far less than the $850m (£480m) that Marsh & McLennan agreed to pay to settle bid-rigging allegations, reports have said.
The settlement is expected to be smaller because it is difficult to estimate the extent of the harm suffered as a result of the alleged accounting irregularities.
