AXA staff could go on strike after the company revealed yesterday that it intends to raise the retirement age for employees.

A workers' ballot is to be held this month on taking strike action, and finance union Unifi will stage a protest outside AXA's Bristol office on Tuesday.

The strike threat surfaced after AXA said they would have to work longer in order to qualify for full pensions. The French insurer told employees that from October members of its final salary scheme would have their retirement age increased to 65.

Unions met company representatives yesterday but revealed the company was refusing to enter into negotiations. Workers will be balloted on strike action within the next three weeks.
