Swiss Re has said that it expects to face claims of about $500m before taxes for damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.
The Zurich-based reinsurer said that, based on preliminary estimates, it expects industry-wide losses from the hurricane to total around $20bn although "estimates have a more than usual degree of uncertainty".
