Only 34% of the public believe that insurance companies treat them fairly, according to a survey by Teamspirit.

The financial services marketing firm's survey reveals that Britons trust insurers less than high street banks and building societies, which received votes of confidence from 53% and 56% of respondents, respectively.

But loan companies (11%) and investment firms (15%) fared even worse than insurers.

Teamspirit managing director Jo Parker said: “Businesses may need to do more to ensure they are meeting the standards set out in TCF.”

The Financial Services Authority has set a deadline of March for treating customers fairly (TCF).
