Towergate Chase lead the field going into day two of the Insurance Times Regatta as Team Euclidian battle to stay in the competition.

After race one Towergate was a staggering eight minutes ahead of its nearest rivals - Zurich Corporate.

Team Euclidian led for some time before Team Towergate joined them at the front.

However things soon went from bad to worse for the Euclidian crew when a sail mast fractured, and they were forced to retire.

Crewmember Mick Kostiv said: "We couldn't believe our luck. The conditions were stretching everything out of the boat and before we knew it the section had blistered."

However things soon improved for the team when the race skipper announced teams could drop their worst result from the final standings.

Kostiv added: "We've used our lucky dip and we're back in it but it just means we can not afford any mistakes today. Hopefully the boat will stand up to it.

"But we're even more determined to do well after this and with the crew we have assembled we're very confident of a top day."

The Euclidian boat was repaired in Portsmouth harbour through the night by race organisers SetSail.

A spokesman said: "The main member was pretty fractured and we needed to do a whole new graft to get it working again. But these boats are sturdy and it didn't cause us too much trouble."
