Vandals are thought to have lit the fire that gutted a £320,000 dump truck at an open cast mine in Scotland.

Miller Pycraft's commercial and applied technology branch has been appointed by insurer Allianz Cornhill to investigate the fire, which broke out early one morning last November. It blazed for several hours, because fire fighters considered it too dangerous to tackle. They eventually extinguished the fire by pouring slurry over the 100-tonne truck.

Strathclyde police are treating the circumstances surrounding the fire as suspicious.
