Specialist income protection (IP) insurer Unum is to open a new administration centre in Bristol after achieving record-breaking new business sales to July 2000.

The insurer has managed £23m in new business – a 36% increase on the same period the previous year.

Sales through independent financial advisers contributed to just over £17m, an increase of 30%.

The insurer attributed much of the growth to its group life and IP business. The new offices will support Unum's planned expansion in the IP market.

Marketing director Eugene McCormack said: “We have enjoyed strong growth over the past 18 months, particularly in sales of group income protection, which has traditionally been our core product.”
