A broker who swapped his suit for lycra has returned victorious from the WDFPF (World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation) World Bench Press Championships, after retaining his title.
Mike Joseph, who recently established his own business, Right Choice Insurance Brokers in Romford, Essex, was competing against the world’s elite at the tournament in Antwerp.
Joseph, who set a world record at the British championships in July by lifting 200kg, said he struggled to keep his body weight down before the event, probably owing to the stress of setting up his firm (and FSA paperwork).
But after weighing in at 81.6kg following two weeks of living on chicken and vegetables, his final lift of 190kg was enough to guarantee victory. His nearest rival could only manage 160kg.
Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
